Over the Years
Looking Back at the Role of Volunteers in the Early Years
SINDA’s volunteers and partners are the engines that power the organisation’s efforts and keep many of its programmes running.

Over the years, our partners and volunteers have devoted their time and effort to SINDA programmes, with most of them volunteering for activities such as various SINDA events and the distribution of festive gift packs to the needy. Some have been engaged in long-term programmes such as Project Read and Elderly Befrienders.

Getting to this stage was no easy feat! Volunteer management for any social services organisation involves much more than simply bringing on board any individual who wants to help. Many potential volunteers apply online from SINDA’s website, while others call or write in. If deemed suitable, they are sent for training, where the facilitators also make notes of their own.

SINDA was one of the first organisations to set up a database of volunteers, with specially-created software, winning a Merit Prize at the inaugural NVPC (National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre) Award in 2001, and the top award the following year. In its 2002 citation, NVPC wrote:

“…to give volunteer involvement a further boost, in 1998, SINDA made a paradigm shift to involve volunteers in all aspects of the organisation including programme design, delivery and evaluation. As a result, SINDA re-engineered its internal processes and culture, transforming itself into a volunteer friendly organisation.”

Today, with the continued support of our organisations and individuals from all walks of life, SINDA is able to reach out to more within our community. In 2020, over 900 volunteers, community partners and schools worked together with SINDA to ensure that families in need were still looked after, especially amidst a backdrop of Covid-19.
Partnerships
A number of partnership opportunities with SINDA are available for organisations that want to do their part and contribute towards the betterment of the community.

Through working with SINDA, Indian organisations across all cultural and religious backgrounds, grassroots, government bodies, educational institutions and businesses have all been able to positively impact countless Singaporeans!
